The journey of BWT

Success stories don’t write themselves. Over 35 years  of BWT's history have been marked by significant milestones – from our beginnings as a small company in Pforzheim, Germany to becoming a global corporate group, BWT has always been driven by a unique spirit of entrepreneurship, dedicated research and a relentless commitment to innovation and excellence.

Although we are rooted in the future, we will always honour our beginnings. Our roots date back to 1823, when Johann Adam Benckiser founded a small chemical factory in Germany. In 1983 Benckiser acquired the Austrian based Mondseer Armaturen that produces water, heating and gas fittings since 1949.

Fast forward to 1990, when Andreas Weissenbacher set the cornerstone for today's BWT through a visionary management buyout. Looking back, we can reflect on more than 35 years of remarkable growth, pioneering technologies, and significant contributions for our world’s most precious resource – water.

Johann Benckiser’s way
Let´s go way back to where our story begins: Best Salmiak. In 1823, Johann Adam Benckiser decided that working alongside his brother and continuing the inherited ironworks would not suffice any longer. He decided to follow his own path and bought a small chemical factory in Pforzheim´s Bleichstraße. The “salmiac hut”, as it was lovingly called, was the first footstep on a long and successful path.

Mondseer Armaturen joins the party
Founded in 1949, Mondseer Armaturen became a fitting name early on. Although leading the Austrian market for water, heating and gas fittings, the company could not succeed against German competitors. The following acquisition of Mondseer Armaturen by Benckiser is a best practice example for a successful strategic investment.

History is made
Benckiser decided to divest is water treatment division, and Andreas Weissenbacher, since 1979 working with Benckiser Austria, together with a few management collagues successfully realised a management buy out. BWT – Best Water Technology was born.

Acquisitions & Foundations
Expansion via foundations in Belgium, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and various acquisitions, mainly in the field of industrial water treatment.

Pioneering EDI technology with SEPTRON ®
BWT becomes the only European manufacturer of EDI technologies. SEPTRON ® electrodeionization paves the way for environmentally friendly water treatment. It has become a vital part of modern water purification for pharma and biotech industries.

Direction H2 Technology with fumatech
BWT takes over fumatech. The Stuttgart-based company develops and produces ion-exchange membranes among others, used for H2 technology – the future of zero-emission mobility.

AQA total
1997 proves to be a busy year for BWT. In a close to genius move, BWT develops AQA total, the chemical free limescale protection. The clue is the unique nano crystal technology, where tiny nanocrystals form in the water, stabilizing the dissolved calcium carbonate. Thus it remains in the water together with other valuable minerals but cannot deposit.

First focus on brand building
BWT starts to proclaim itself as a world-renowned water brand by joining the Point-of-Use sector. Additionally, a new product design is revealed, setting new standards in the rather traditional water treatment sector. With the foundation of water+more, BWT starts its HORECA activities.

Fumatech develops fumapem®
Starting from direct methanol fuel cells for portable applications in laptops and from high temperature membrane fuel cells for stationary applications in combined heat and power systems, fumatech focuses on hydrogen fuel cells for mobile applications in forklifts, passenger cars and trucks.

bestmax and bestmax PREMIUM
BWT brings best water technology (and quality) to the hotel and catering industries by introducing bestmax and bestmax PREMIUM. The latter removes unwanted components such as limescale, particles and taste-altering substances (like chlorine) in the water supply and adds Mg2+. Both offer filtration solutions for coffee machines, vending machines and clean steam in ovens and combi steamers.

Point-of-Entry business strikes again when BWT launches the AQA Perla softener. The optimal solution for transforming hard, calcareous water into soft water that‘s low in lime in every home.

Strong investments in infrastructure and marketing
More than 100 million euros are devoted to massively strenghen the Point-of-Use business and brand development. BWT‘s claim For You and Planet Blue is developed.

Revolutionary Mg2+ magnesium mineralization
The Mg2+ mineralization technology not only filters water at home, but also enriches it with magnesium. As a result, the healthy and pure water‘s pH value is almost neutral that brings out the full aromas of coffee and tea.

Sports turn PINK
In 2015, BWT starts to strategically sponsor sports teams to carry its mission into the world. Soon enough, pink is becoming a fixture in alpine skis, ski jumping, football and many other disciplines. The most famous sports sponsorship, however, is since 2017 in Formula 1.

BWT bestaqua
BWT supplies the catering and hotel industry with best reverse osmosis water for dishwashing technology, for steam generation in combi steamers and steam cookers as well as for vapor management in baking.

Acquisition of Aquatron
Israels Aquatron, a world-leading manufacturer of swimming pool robots, joins the BWT familiy. A perfect fit for BWT‘s growing pool business.

Joint ventures with HAIER in China
By founding two joint ventures in Qingdao, China, together with HAIER Group, BWT is expanding into the Chinese market. Innovative water treatment products for kitchen and household appliances paired with a strong position in China and other important markets makes HAIER the ideal strategic partner for BWT in China.

THE Mobility F.C. Membranes Company & BWT Chemours
The foundation of the joint venture between BWT and fumatech with the American chemicals group Chemours, THE Mobility F.C. Membranes Company, in Germany has generated a new force in the development of innovative hydrogen technologies.
