Is there microplastic in our water?

Microplastic is created when plastic is broken down by UV radiation or mechanical abrasion. It is defined as plastic particles between 5 micrometers (0.005 mm) and 5 millimeters and is sometimes so fine that it is one-tenth the diameter of a human hair. These particles can be found in the environment and in water.

How much microplastic is actually in our drinking water varies depending on geological conditions, region, and various treatment methods. It is not conclusively determined, as research has not yet reached a clear result.

Filtering Microplastics from Water and Utilizing Added Value

BWT offers a range of solutions to free your water not only from microplastics but also from other unwanted substances such as herbicides, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues.

Our table water filters provide protection against particles up to 0.2 millimeters. For everything below that, our tap-connected solutions – like Ultrafiltration (UTS) and reverse osmosis – ensure the purest water directly from your tap.

Our systems enrich your water through mineralization, improve the taste, and increase enjoyment. In addition to microplastics, we also reduce lime and chlorine, thus protecting your household appliances and providing softer, more pleasant water.

BWT technologies address where conventional drinking water treatments reach their limits. Thus, you also protect the environment by avoiding water bottles and unnecessary plastic waste and CO2 emissions from their transport.

With one filter cartridge, you save 120 1-liter plastic bottles.

Can microplastics be filtered from water?

Yes, it is possible to filter microplastics from water, but it requires specialized filter technologies. Depending on the technology, different sizes of plastic particles can be removed. Coarser particles can be filtered with table water filters, finer ones with sediment filters or ultrafiltration (UTS). The finest particles are removed with a reverse osmosis filter.

Why is microplastic in drinking water harmful?

The focus on microplastics is still relatively new, so there are no long-term tests that prove the harmful health effects of microplastics in drinking water. However, microplastics are suspected of transporting toxic chemicals (heavy metals, organic pollutants, etc.) that can have health impacts.

Which water has no microplastics?

It can be challenging to find water that is completely free of microplastics, as these particles can be widespread in the environment and different regions may have varying concentrations of microplastics. However, our high-quality water treatment systems, which use specialized filtration techniques, can significantly reduce the amount of microplastics in the water.
